sesame street

Sesame Street is an American educational children's television series and a pioneer of the contemporary educational television standard, combining both education and entertainment. Sesame Street is well known for its Muppets characters created by Jim Henson. It premiered on November 10, 1969, and is the longest running children's program on US television.[1] The show is produced in the United States by the non-profit organization Sesame Workshop, formerly known as the Children's Television Workshop (CTW), founded by Joan Ganz Cooney and Ralph Rogers. The show has been running for 40 years.

Up until the late 1960s, the use of television as an educational tool in the US was "unproven" and "a revolutionary concept".[2] In 1966, the Carnegie Institute hired Joan Ganz Cooney to study how the media could be used to help young children, especially those from low-income families, learn and prepare for school.[3][4] Cooney proposed using television's "most engaging traits",[5] including high production values, sophisticated writing, and quality film and animation, to reach the largest audience possible.[5] Cooney suggested creating a program that would spread prolearning values to both viewers and nonviewers (including their parents) that would affect them for many years after they stopped watching it.[6]

As a result of Cooney's initial proposal, the Carnegie Institute awarded her an $8 million grant to establish, in collaboration with Carnegie Institute vice-president Lloyd Morrisett, the Children’s Television Workshop (CTW) and create a new children's television program.[4][7] In 1968, millions more were invested by the Ford Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and the US federal government. Cooney began to assemble a team of producers: Jon Stone, Dave Connell and Sam Gibbon.[4] That summer, five three-day curriculum planning seminars, led by Harvard University professor Gerald S. Lesser, were conducted in Boston.[4][8] The seminars marked the beginning of Jim Henson's involvement in Sesame Street,[4] and provided the show's producers and writers with a "crash course in child development, psychology, and preschool education".[9] The new show, called the "Preschool Educational Television Show" in promotional materials, was built around an inner-city street, a choice that was "unprecedented".[10] The producers and writers could not come up with a name they liked "up until the last moment".[11] They finally settled upon the name they least disliked: Sesame Street, although they initially feared that it would be too difficult for young children to pronounce.[11]

Two days before the premiere of Sesame Street, a thirty-minute preview entitled This Way to Sesame Street was shown on NBC. The show was financed by a $50,000 grant from Xerox. Written by Stone and produced by CTW publicist Bob Hatch, it was taped the day before it aired.[12] Newsday called the preview "a unique display of cooperation between commercial and noncommercial broadcasters".[12] Sesame Street premiered on PBS on November 10, 1969.[13] The new show was praised from the start. As writer Michael Davis states, "...It became the rare children's show stamped with parental approval".[14] The show reached only 67.6% of the nation,

Rihanna's 20/20 full interview with Diane Sawyer - does it promote her forthcoming CD titled Rated R? The full 20/20 interview aired Friday night on ABC television and was posted online today at the 20/20 website.

The interview primarily focuses on the singer's personal story of her troubled relationship with singer, Chris Brown; however, some will see the timing of the interview as important for the pop star's image and future sales of her new CD, Rated R. She does not mention the CD in the interview, one side of the discussion may state correctly. The album releases in just over 2 weeks, the other side of the discussion may also state rightly.

At one point in the interview, Rihanna mentions how she was not going to let going back with her boyfriend, who was convicted in court of physically abusing her on a night in February, cost her the "empire" she had worked so hard to build.

Song titles on the CD have listeners wondering how much they may reflect what the pop singer has lived through this year. A track listing appears below.

Akeelah and the Bee

Akeelah and the Bee is a 2006 film written and directed by Doug Atchison. It tells the story of Akeelah Anderson, portrayed by Keke Palmer, an 11-year-old girl who participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, her mother portrayed by Angela Bassett, schoolmates, and also her coach, portrayed by Laurence Fishburne. It also explores issues of education in the black community.

The film was developed over a period of 10 years by Doug Atchison, the germ of the idea having started after his watching the Scripps National Spelling Bee of 1994 and combined with his experiences spent tutoring disadvantaged students in the area around the University of Southern California, where he attended film school. After four years of trying to secure funding for the film, the documentary film Spellbound came out in 2002 and perhaps, according to one producer, Sid Ganis, facilitated funding. Spellbound features a black girl, Ashley White, from Washington, D.C., in rough parallel to the independent idea developed in Akeelah and the Bee.

The film has been heavily promoted by Starbucks as a result of a partnership between Lions Gate Entertainment, 2929 Entertainment, and Starbucks Entertainment. It became the first DVD offered for sale at Starbucks.[2]

The film earned positive reviews from most critics, getting an 83% from 131 critics at Rotten Tomatoes.

Plot

Akeelah Anderson attends Crenshaw, Los Angeles, California Middle School, a predominantly black school in South Los Angeles. Akeelah is a bright girl and never makes errors on her spelling tests. She lives with her widowed mother, her three siblings, and her infant niece. Her teacher recommends that she sign up for the Crenshaw Schoolwide Spelling Bee, which she wins easily. After that, Dr. Joshua Larabee, a visiting English professor, tests her with some difficult words and finds that she has the potential to reach the National Spelling Bee.

When Akeelah asks Dr. Larabee to coach her, he rejects her for being rude. Instead, she studies on her own for the district spelling bee. During the bee, her sister Kiana catches one of the other contestants cheating, which allows Akeelah to take the tenth and final qualifying spot for the regional/state bee. She also meets Javier, a twelve-year-old Mexican-American boy and fellow speller. Javier invites her to join the spelling club at Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, Woodland Hills.

In Woodland Hills, Akeelah meets Dylan Chiu, a Chinese-American boy who had won second place at the past two national spelling bees. He is contemptuous of her — as well as the other members of the spelling club—and asks her to spell xanthosis. When she starts with a "z", he interrupts her and tells her she needs a coach.

At the conclusion of the spelling club meeting, Javier invites Akeelah to his birthday party. During the party, Javier impulsively kisses her on the cheek. Dylan plays Scrabble with Akeelah and several other guests. Akeelah almost defeats Dylan, but loses by just two points. She later overhears Dylan's father reprimanding him for nearly losing to "a little black girl" and harshly telling him he must win first place.

Akeelah's mother, Tanya, is depressed at her husband's death, and does not want Akeelah to participate in the state bee. She denies Akeelah the right to participate in further bees, but the bee is so important to Akeelah that she forges her father's signature on the consent form.

As the state bee draws near, Akeelah memorizes all the winning words from past spelling bees and works with Dr. Larabee, learning not only words but life lessons.

During the state bee, Akeelah's mother interrupts and forces Akeelah off the stage. After an intense discussion with her coach and the school principal, Akeelah's mother relents. In the meantime, Javier has avoided Akeelah's disqualification; he walks slowly to the microphone and asks for his word, "ratatouille," to be repeated and defined and used in a sentence over and over again, stalling for time for Akeelah to return. Dylan finishes first, Javier second, and Akeelah third; they all advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

As Christmas approaches, Akeelah goes out to buy Dr. Larabee a present, not knowing that he plans to give up coaching her because she reminds him too much of his deceased daughter Denise. Instead, he gives Akeelah 5,000 flashcards to study.

Without her coach, Akeelah loses her motivation. She is rejected by her best friend, Georgia, and feels the pressure from her neighborhood to do them proud. After a pep talk from her mother, Akeelah recruits neighborhood coaches, including her family members and the drug dealer, Derrick T, and prepares in earnest.

After reuniting with Dr. Larabee, Akeelah goes to Washington, D.C. with her mother, oldest brother, best friend, principal, and Dr. Larabee, unaware that her coach has paid for four of their tickets. Her performance is solid and steady thanks to her "jump rope" strategy from Dr. Larabee. With only a few stumbles, she is smiled on as a crowd favorite. Javier and Dylan also appear; Javier is eliminated on "Merovingian", finishing 5th, and begins rooting for Akeelah. Finally, it is down to Dylan and Akeelah, and the two finalists are allowed a brief break before continuing with the championship words.

During the break, Akeelah goes to wish Dylan good luck, but she overhears his father's intense, pressured expectations of Dylan: win first place, because no one finishes second three times. When Dr. Larabee tells her how proud he is of her, Akeelah asks him whether she can come back if she loses; he replies, "Of course you can!"

Akeelah attempts to throw away the competition by deliberately misspelling. Dylan is baffled; he "knows" that she knows this word, because he was the one who told her that it began with an "x". To buy time, Dylan then misspells it on purpose as well. The commentators discuss the odds against two such excellent spellers both spelling the same word wrong. Dylan uses the time to tell Akeelah that he only wants to win fair and square. They both go word for word up to number 24. Dylan correctly spells "logorrhea", earning him at least a share of first place, and then Akeelah spells "pulchritude" correctly to become co-champion, setting off cheers from Washington, D.C. to California.

Abnormal posturing

Abnormal posturing is an involuntary flexion or extension of the arms and legs, indicating severe brain injury. It occurs when one set of muscles becomes incapacitated while the opposing set is not, and an external stimulus such as pain causes the working set of muscles to contract.[1] The posturing may also occur without a stimulus.[2] Since posturing is an important indicator of the amount of damage that has occurred to the brain, it is used by medical professionals to measure the severity of a coma with the Glasgow Coma Scale (for adults) and the Pediatric Glasgow Coma Scale (for infants).

The presence of posturing indicates a severe medical emergency requiring immediate medical attention. Decerebrate and decorticate posturing are strongly associated with poor outcome in a variety of conditions. For example, near-drowning victims that display decerebrate or decorticate posturing have worse outcomes than those that do not.[3] Changes in the condition of the patient may cause him or her to alternate between different types of posturing

Posturing can be caused by conditions that lead to large increases in intracranial pressure.[5] Such conditions include traumatic brain injury, stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, brain tumors, and encephalopathy.[6] Posturing due to stroke usually only occurs on one side of the body and may also be referred to as spastic hemiplegia.[2] Diseases such as malaria are also known to cause the brain to swell and cause this posturing effect.

Decerebrate and decorticate posturing can indicate that brain herniation is occurring[7] or is about to occur.[5] Brain herniation is an extremely dangerous condition in which parts of the brain are pushed past hard structures within the skull. In herniation syndrome, which is indicative of brain herniation, decorticate posturing occurs, and, if the condition is left untreated, develops into decerebrate posturing.[7]

Posturing has also been displayed by patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease,[8] diffuse cerebral hypoxia,[9] and brain abscesses.[2]

In children

In children younger than age two, posturing is not a reliable finding because their nervous systems are not yet developed.[2] However, Reye's syndrome and traumatic brain injury can both cause decorticate posturing in children.[2]

For reasons that are poorly understood, but which may be related to high intracranial pressure, children with malaria frequently exhibit decorticate, decerebrate, and opisthotonic posturing

Zenyatta's performance in winning the Breeders' Cup Classic not only elicited wild reactions from her thousands of admirers on hand at Santa Anita on Saturday but also praise from the connections of several of the horses she beat. Many of them believe the undefeated mare now deserves to be named Horse of the Year.

"She beat the heck out of us," said Eoin Harty, the trainer of Colonel John, who finished fifth in the Classic. "That was probably the greatest performance I've ever seen. Fantastic. I'm happy and proud for Zenyatta and glad I was here to see that. I never saw Secretariat run, but I've never seen anything like her. I'm really torn when it comes to the Horse of the Year. I'm probably Zenyatta's biggest fan, but it's also hard to forget what Rachel Alexandra did. If ever there was a year to split the award, this is it."

At the Tuesday post-position draw, Bob Baffert heralded his colleague John Shirreffs and the decision by Zenyatta's owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, to bypass the Ladies' Classic to run her against males in the Classic. And the Hall of Fame trainer exuded similar emotions immediately after his Richard the Kid finished sixth in the Classic.

"I was disappointed my horse didn't run better, but what a thrill seeing history made by Zenyatta," said Baffert. "It was the only time in horse racing that I didn't mind getting beat in a race. If they don't reward her with Horse of the Year, it would be a travesty. Zenyatta made the Breeders' Cup. And the way she won! I've never seen a crowd so captivated. It felt like a horse winning the third leg of the Triple Crown."

Christophe Clement was extremely proud of the effort his Gio Ponti turned in finishing second in the Classic. But even a four-time Grade 1 winner like Gio Ponti proved no match for Zenyatta once she came rolling alongside in the late stretch.

"My horse ran very well and proved the decision to try him in the Classic was the right one," said Clement. "She's just a freak. What can I say?"

Aidan O'Brien, whose Rip Van Winkle finished a disappointing 10th as the second betting choice in the Classic, had not seen much of Zenyatta before Saturday. But he was full of admiration after the race.

"She's a great filly and a credit to all the people involved with her," said O'Brien.

Jerry Hollendorfer is the fourth-winningest trainer in the history of the sport with over 5,500 wins, and has not only seen but been beaten by Zenyatta on more than a few occasions over the past couple of seasons. And he says he'll remember the 2009 Classic for a long time to come.

"This will be a standout moment for a lot of people," said Hollendorfer. "I know it is for me. What she accomplished today was a great achievement and a terrific moment for horse racing. The fans came out to see her win and they got what they wanted to see. It was a very gutsy move for her connections to run her in the Classic and they really deserve this victory. Obviously Horse of the Year will come down to the two fillies. As for me, well, I'm partial to the West Coast, so I'd give it to Zenyatta."

Angel Cordero Jr. has ridden some of the greatest horses in the history of racing and has seen history being made in the sport for over four decades. But he said he's never witnessed anything like what he'd just seen watching Zenyatta storm down the stretch to capture the Classic.

"That was one of the greatest moments I've witnessed in my life and I'm not only talking about horse racing," said Cordero. "She not only won but it was the way she won that made this so special because she did it with something to spare. We've now been privileged to have seen two great fillies in the same year, and it's impossible to say one was better than the other. For the good of the sport, they've got to give them both the Horse of the Year award because it just wouldn't be fair for one of them to lose. I know one thing, if they do split it, nobody will be mad."

Ann Jillian

Ann Jillian was born January 29 1950, although many sources say 1951 is her birth year.[1][2] She was born to Roman Catholic Lithuanian immigrant parents and speaks Lithuanian fluently.

Jillian has been acting since 1960 when she played Little Bo Peep in the Disney film Babes In Toyland. She appeared as Dainty June in the Rosalind Russell-Natalie Wood 1962 movie version of Gypsy. She had several television appearances in the 1960s and 1970s, notably becoming a regular on the 1960s sitcom Hazel and appearing in The Twilight Zone episode "Mute" as the mute telepathic Ilse Nielson in 1963. She also did voice acting, for Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and Sealab 2020 in the early 1970s, but—told she was too tall to play youthful roles of the day and too young to play a leading lady—there was no more work for her in Hollywood. She took a department store job and studied psychology, but heeded the advice of casting director Hoyt Bowers and Walt Disney who had told her, "whatever you do, keep working at your craft."[3]

Jillian married Andy Murcia, a Chicago police sergeant, in 1977 and shortly thereafter Murcia retired to manage his wife's career. Earlier in her career she had been managed by Joyce Selznick.

In the late 1970s she toured in musical comedies including Sammy Cahn's Words and Music. She was picked from that production to appear in the original company of Sugar Babies on Broadway with Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller in 1979.

Jahvid Best, Cal's Heisman Trophy candidate is, sadly as I write this, on the way to a hospital having suffered a major injury in today's game against Oregon State.

With 2:06 and Cal on the Oregon State three yard line in the second quarter, Best took the handoff from Cal QB Kevin Riley, turned around left end and as he was about to score a touchdown, jumped in the air. As he was airborne he was hit by OSU Safety Cameron Collins, who threw Best with his left hand as Best was in the air.

When as Best was coming down - he was about five feet in the air - his body turned so that the upper portion of his back hit the turf. He scored.

Best held out both arms as if he was frozen and did not get up.

Cheers turned to silence and both Cal and Oregon State players dropped to one knee to pray for Cal's star running back.

In a fast moment, trainers and doctors came out along with members of Best's family and a small crowd formed around him. After what seemed to be an eternity of waiting for Best to some how get up, all hopes were eliminated when a cart and a stretcher were brought onto the field.

Best was placed in a stretcher with what appeared to be some kind of large orange brace around his neck and head.

As of this writing (I was actually on my way to the game) there's no official word on Best's injury or condition. The game is being televised on the Fox Sports Network.

Jahvid Best is Cal's third all time leading rusher and one of 16 Maxwell Awards semi-finalists for the nation's best player.

Oregon State is now leading Cal 21 to 7 in the second quarter.

If you have spent anytime online trying to actually make money then you have at least read, and tried to optimize search engine traffic to drive customers to your sight. However, what you've found out quickly is that to optimize search engine traffic is TOUGH!

In fact, to do it correctly it is a daily job. Not only do you have to do a lot of up front work to create the "momentum" but you have to continue doing this at least weekly, and preferably daily if you want to have a long term career actually making money online.

To help you out I've included five steps to optimize search engine traffic:

  • First, start a blog! This is the easiest and most search engine friendly feature around. If you haven't done this yet then stop right here, go to one of the many free sites and get started. One key is to put your websites name in the blog's name. This will help to create backlinks that will drive traffic to your parent website.
  • Step 2. Type in your market niche keyword(s) into Google and see what pops up. Look at your competitors sites and study what makes them get onto the first page. It could be the title, the content or even age. Use what seems to be working as a guideline for your site. It really is about experimentation!
  • Step 3. Take every class you can find that teaches you to optimize search engine traffic. There are plenty of free ones and some great paid courses as well. If you just don't have time to do this then hire someone! There are many talented men and women out there that will do this very inexpensively.
  • Step 4. Go to your favorite forum and start posting content and make sure your URL is included in your signature. This is a GREAT way to optimize for traffic. A word of caution here, make sure that when you respond to posts you are providing quality content and not just saying "I agree" in order to get your signature shown
  • Step 5. Finally, keep good records and test everything! Keep a spreadsheet, write down what you tried that day and then check your websites' ranking. Go back a week later and check your ranking again. Do this EVERY WEEK to see if your efforts to optimize search engine traffic is working or not!

And that's it! Of course there are many more intricacies you will learn as you continue in the world of online marketing and as you try to optimize search engine traffic. But, these five tips will get you started. Give it a try, don't quit and do something every day to drive traffic to your site!

Big business has been onto the virtues of VoIP for years. Companies such as Cisco, Avaya and Nortel sell billions of dollars worth of VoIP systems annually to large corporations. For big business there is no real alternative to VoIP business phone systems. For a start the traditional TDM option is no longer manufactured in volume. Secondly, businesses with distributed national and international operations can make significant cost savings from using VoIP. They can eliminate the PSTN costs associated with long distance “internal” calls.

The story is different for SMBs, SOHO operators and the general public. These segments also want to use VoIP and save money. Their interest was initially sparked via millions of: Skype, Google Talk, Jajah and Gizmo Project … downloads and the promise of “Free Phone Calls.” They are a bargain, but not an alternative to a commercial grade business phone service. They’re OK for calling friends and family, but not an option for selling a product or closing a deal.

There are two recent developments that have made VoIP phone systems accessible to SMBs.

(1) Hosted VoIP PBX or Virtual VoIP PBX services.

(2) VoIP PBX appliances suitable for SMB and SOHO users.

Both options will deliver business quality VoIP and SMBs are scrambling to sign up for one or the other. They don’t necessarily obtain the same benefits as large corporations from using a VoIP business phone system. Typically SMBs don’t have the scale or distributed operations required to bulk up enough savings from simply eliminating the cost of “internal calls.” As a consequence the arguments for SMBs switching to VoIP usually revolve around the ability to project a more professional image, access to sexy phone features or the promise of Unified Communications.

Inevitably, VoIP PBX appliances and VoIP software will become cheaper, smaller and more convenient. High speed broadband is already ubiquitous and just as the computer became a household consumer item, so will the VoIP phone system. Households will have a main number and family members, especially teenage daughters will have personal phone extensions, voice mail boxes and follow me profiles.

Is there a VoIP bubble on the horizon? Probably, a VoIP phone system is something that everyone can use. There is an enormous market to be tapped (pun intended) and fortunes will be made on the back of innovative business models.

Chris Green is a communications consultant and writer. He notes that [http://www.business-phone-tools.com/voip-phone-systems.html]VoIP phone systems have achieved respectability, in fact VoIP is now the default option for business telephony. In selecting a business phone system the choice is between VoIP and VoIP. Green notes that large corporations have been using VoIP for years. It’s now the turn of SMBs and SOHO operators. Might we see a VoIP PBX appliance in every home within a decade?

What if your phone was not your mobile but an internet phone? It might be… these are the latest and greatest technology. There are promotional products all over the Web in case you haven’t heard. Is this really different from an ordinary one? Not really. You still have a receiver… you can still use a handset that you plug into a box that hooks to your computer. You can still receive voice mail messages anytime you want.

It sounds like these promotional products are pretty similar to ordinary products so far.

Are these customizable internet phones portable? Do you plug these personalized items into a wall socket? No! Not necessarily… well, that isn’t entirely true. If you have an internet connection on your laptop and you plug your product into it, technically you do have a portable customized product. Let’s find out more about how these promotional products work so you understand the process. Then you can decide if these items and we calling are right for you. Most people say “aha” once they figure out how easy it is to use instead of traditional land lines.

Customized Products Explained

So what are these promotional products all about and how can they be used as an effective branded item? They hook to the web; that is phones certainly connect to the internet and work a lot like ordinary handsets although they do not cost nearly as much as ordinary items especially when you have to make a “long distance” telephone call.

Most of them offer a wide range of features just as you would expect of say your mobile phone, but you don’t have to pay into an expensive plan for 5-years or anything like that. There are many advantages of using these promotional products for online web calling too.

Maybe you’ve heard of some of the technology used to make web calling possible… products including VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or SKYPE.

How these products Work

Here is how customized web products work. First they are not really that customized because anyone can use them any way they want. You simply use the internet instead of your phone line to call people and send them your voice message (or live call). If you use VoIP, the company you sign up with (a web like company) sends you a box that hooks up to your internet and you make calls with it just as you would your phone.

You just talk through your connection instead of your telephone line.

Pretty neat, huh?

There are many advantages to these personalized products. You can send your messages to your email, you can save on calling fees, and you can pick your own zip codes because you are not using a phone line that is linked with a local land line.

While they may not be for everyone, and some people prefer to use what they “know”, undoubtedly at some point in the near future, as these products and calling services become more popular, internet phones will certainly learn to dominate the calling market.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a general term for a family of transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks. Other terms frequently encountered and synonymous with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

Internet telephony refers to communications services — voice, facsimile, and/or voice-messaging applications — that are transported via the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The basic steps involved in originating an Internet telephone call are conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression/translation of the signal into Internet protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the Internet; the process is reversed at the receiving end.[1]

VoIP systems employ session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs which encode speech allowing transmission over an IP network as digital audio via an audio stream. Codec use is varied between different implementations of VoIP (and often a range of codecs are used); some implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high fidelity stereo codecs.
